Bollywood legend and global singing icon Asha Bhosle has died at age 92, with Indian actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas honoring the late figure as someone "whose art helped shape the emotional landscape of an entire nation."

Bhosle died Sunday in Mumbai, India, as a result "of multiple organ failure," as physician Pratit Samdani at Breach Candy Hospital told the Associated Press. Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, added in a social media post that her grandmother was admitted to the hospital Saturday with a chest infection.

Bhosle's son, Anand Bhosle, later announced that the late icon's last rites will be performed on Monday.

Across eight decades, Bhosle's voice appeared in approximately 12,000 songs, with her vocals becoming a defining entity of the Bollywood film industry and Indian culture at large. According to IMDb, Bhosle's first formal film credit dates back to 1948.

Chora Jonas, a Hollywood star who rose to prominence with roles in Bollywood features at the start of her career as an actress, paid tribute to Bhosle shortly after news broke of her death.

"There are some losses that feel like losing a piece of your childhood, your memories, your home. Asha ji was that for so many of us. Her voice wasn’t just part of Indian music, it was part of the backdrop of our lives," the 43-year-old wrote on Instagram, alongside posting a photo of the pair together. "It played through our homes growing up, through family celebrations, through heartbreaks, through joy, through the quiet and loud moments that became memories before we realized it."

She continued, "For my generation and so many before and after, she wasn’t simply a legend we admired, she was a constant. A voice so eternal it felt like it would always be there. It is hard to put into words what it means to lose someone whose art helped shape the emotional landscape of an entire nation."

Chopra Jonas thanked Bhosle "for giving us a lifetime of songs, of feeling, of beauty. For being one of the greatest gifts, music has ever known," and finished the post by stressing that Bhosle's "voice will live where all true legends do, forever in our hearts."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Bhosle online, writing, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle Ji, one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known."

The Indian politician continued, highlighting Bhosle's "extraordinary musical journey" that spanned decades and "enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world."

"Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried timeless brilliance. I’ll always cherish the interactions I’ve had with her," he wrote. "My condolences to her family, admirers and music lovers. She will continue to inspire generations and her songs will forever echo in people’s lives."
